I'm Just a Girl! You know what I'm talking about....a big glass of wine and truffle fries can cure almost anything. So serve it up for the girls!

You'll need just a few things to make these crispy air fryer spuds!

  • Air Fryer - of course the most important tool for these quick potatoes. If I had to recommend one, I've loved my Ninja Foodi Air Fryer. 
  • Mixing Bowl 
  • Measuring Spoon
  • Knife & Cutting Board 

Important Ingredients

  • Sweet Potatoes: The star ingredient! Get sweet potatoes that have firm and smooth skin and a uniform color. Also, they should be thick and large so we can slice them into mouthful wedges! 
  • Seasoning: We'll keep it simple with a few pantry essential spices, including salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and onion powder. 
  • Brown Sugar: Boosts the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes. Plus, when brown sugar caramelizes, you get a deliciously crispy result! Yum yum!
  • Celery Seed: Just a wee bit to balance out the sweetness. If you've never used this spice before, it tastes a lot like celery. 

Substitutions & Variations

These simple air fried sweet potatoes are delicious as is, but if you need to swap out some ingredients or want a new variation, try these:

  • Use a store-bought seasoned salt if you don't want to make your own
  • Use frozen sweet potato fries if you are in a pinch!
  • Make French Fries with Regular Potatoes: Use Russet potatoes instead of sweet potatoes and enjoy! Russets have low moisture, so they'll crisp up well! And if you have extra russet potatoes on hand, fry out my Velveeta Potato Soup! 
  • Try a Different Seasoning: You can make your air fryer sweet potato fries spicier or milder, depending on your taste. 
  • Throw in Some Parmesan Cheese: Enjoy the extra crisp!
  • You can also try this recipe with other veggies like crispy air fried zucchini.
  • Try a different oil: Like these frozen sweet potato fries with a truffle oil!

  1. Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. Slice the sweet potatoes into wedges and add to a mixing bowl with the olive oil and spices.

  1. Step 2: Place the sweet potato pieces in the pre-heated air fryer basket and air fry at 400 degrees for 8 minutes.

  1. Step 3: Halfway during the cook time, toss the potatoes and continue cooking.

  1. Step 4: Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and fresh parsley.

Top Tip

Soak your peeled and cut sweet potato wedges in cold water for about half an hour. I know it adds time to the recipe, but it's a surefire way to get the excess starch out of the picture. No limp and soggy sweet potato fries! 

Expert Tips for Crispy Air Fried Potatoes

There are a few basic tips to hold onto when you're working with an air fryer. These ensure your food gets hot air through and through!

  • Never overcrowd your air fryer basket.
  • Place your wedges in a single layer.
  • Give your basket a good shake midway.
  • Use a solid surface (like a cutting board) and a sharp knife to slice your wedges. I'm no cutting pro, but I try to keep all my slices equally thick. It helps cook them evenly. If some of your slices are thinner than others, they'll cook faster, and you'll have a mixed batch of under and overcooked wedges. No fun!
  • Once done, pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
  • Use a large mixing bowl to season the wedges. We want each piece coated perfectly!
  • Adjust the seasoning to taste. You can also add a bit of cornstarch for extra crispy edges.

Use these for all your air fryer recipes, and you'll never end up with soggy items!

💡Recipe FAQ

Can I bake seasoned sweet potato wedges?

Yep. Your wedges may take longer to cook in the oven and might not turn out as crispy, but they will still be delicious! Set your oven to 425 degrees F, put your wedges in a baking tray over a baking sheet, and bake for 10-15 minutes on each side.

How to store leftover sweet potato fries?

Sweet potato wedges (or any other for that fact) taste best when eaten fresh out of the air fryer (or oven). They are crispy and warm. But if you have any leftovers, you can keep them in the fridge in an airtight container. They'll last for 3-4 days. Warm them in the air fryer for five minutes when you want to eat them again!

Ingredients

  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1.5 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon celery seed
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees while you prepare the potatoes.
  • Slice the sweet potatos in half lengthwise and cut each potato into 8-10 wedges.
  • Add the potato wedges to a large mixing bowl and coat with the olive oil.
  • Sprinkle the seasonings onto the potatoes and toss again to combine.
  • In batches, air fry the sweet potato wedges at 400 degrees for 8 minutes. Flip the sweet poato wedges over and continue cooking for 5 minutes.
  • Remove and allow to cool for 3-5 minutes then enjoy served with your favorite dipping sauce!
