Ingredients for Brioche French Toast Casserole
- Brioche Bread - Buttery brioche bread is the highlight of our recipe. It has a beautiful golden brown color and a nice sweet flavor, making it an excellent French toast recipe material. If you can't get your hands on it, you can replace it with challah bread. For a nutty flavor, use your regular French bread. And if you want to leave out butter from your recipe, grab sourdough bread.
- Eggs - We'll be making a custard mixture to soak the bread slices in. I've made it a habit of using eggs at room temperature until a recipe specifically states otherwise. They're easier to incorporate.
- Whole Milk - Milk will add moisture and richness to the baked French toast casserole. If you want a creamier version, use heavy cream. If you prefer plant-based milk, go with almond or coconut milk.
- Maple Syrup - I'm a fan! So, I stick to maple syrup to sweeten almost all my dessert and breakfast recipes. You can use any other sweetener, such as light brown sugar or honey.
- Cinnamon - a key ingredient for delicious French Toast Casserole, cinnamon gives the dish that comforting flavor we all love. Cinnamon pairs well with apples also in these Apple Crescent Rolls!
- Vanilla Extract - Vanilla extract makes everything taste better! Use pure vanilla extract if possible.
- Nutmeg - There's something about this slightly spicy and nutty spice that elevates French toast casserole to another level. Plus, it pairs perfectly with cinnamon.
- Salt - Yep, even sweet recipes can't leave this guy out!
- Agave - You'll need to prepare your blueberry sauce. So gooood!
- Blueberries - Repeat after me, fresh berries, please! Fresh blueberries are the star ingredient in our blueberry sauce and add a burst of flavor to every bite.
You'll also need water and some powdered sugar!

Serving the Easy Breakfast Casserole
This overnight brioche French toast casserole is our breakfast table staple on weekend mornings. I usually just sprinkle powdered sugar on top, add a dollop of whipped cream, and add some fresh blueberries. If you have chocolate lovers in the house, throw in some chocolate chips.
When I'm making this for special occasions, like for a Christmas morning treat, I make it extra by serving it with my Crispy Fried Goat Cheese, Havarti and Spinach Mini Quiche, and Pesto Egg Sandwich.
You can also go with a side of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit. It's the perfect breakfast to feed a whole family and will leave everyone satisfied and happy.
Tips and Tricks!
While breakfast casseroles are inherently easy by design (that's why we love them!) here are my best tips and tricks for a perfect French toast casserole...
- Use slightly stale bread for this recipe. Fresh bread will soak all the egg custard, and you won't get the same texture. You can dry bread in the oven for 22-25 minutes at 225°F.
- Don't be shy with the cinnamon and nutmeg! These spices are what make this dish extra flavorful.
- Get creative with toppings! Serve it with your favorite fruits, nuts, or even a drizzle of chocolate sauce for a decadent breakfast experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Well, it's probably because you underbaked it. You need to bake it for 50 minutes or until it's puffed on the top and jiggly upon shaking.
Use your airtight container to store the leftovers. You can also cover the container with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Keep it in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Reheat the leftovers in the oven the next morning (or whenever you're serving) until warm. If you're heating individual servings, use your microwave
