Why You'll Love This Recipe & Naked Nutrition...

This recipe is brought to you by Naked Nutrition and I am so happy to share that I'm using their Naked Whey Vanilla Protein Powder for our easy microwave cake.

The quality of protein matters a lot and what I feed my family matters to me too! As the name suggests, Naked Nutrition is transparent with their ingredients and you'll never find any artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or mixing agents in the products.

This is a huge deal for me and why I love using this brand. Here are a few more reasons you're going to love this easy recipe:

  • The single serve portion also makes it ideal for a quick snack or dessert when you don't feel like whipping up a full Snickerdoodle Bundt Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookies, or Chocolate Cherry Cupcakes.
  • Easy to make. Mug cakes are single serve with just a few pantry ingredients and they couldn't be more simple!
  • Quick. In addition to being simple in terms of ingredients, time isn't an issue either! 5 minutes from start to finish is all it takes to make this protein cake recipe.
  • Healthy & high in protein. If you are like me, I'm always looking for ways to incorporate more protein into my daily diet and mixing it right in to a cake is something I can get behind!
  • Customizable. Maybe the most fun part is that these single serve mug cakes can be customized to your liking! Try out different flavor protein powders (Naked Nutrition has a ton of delicious flavor options to choose from!) add in chocolate chips or sprinkles...the options are endless so get creative with it!

Baking with Protein Powder

So did you know you can bake with protein powder? It's easy to do and if you don't feel like making mug cakes, protein brownies, or protein balls Naked Nutrition has other options for baking!

  • Banana Bread Mix - make delicious protein packed banana bread with ease using this mix. Make muffins for a single serve option.
  • Pancake Mix - needing to get some extra protein in at breakfast? Protein pancakes are something the whole family would love!
  • Brownie Mix - if chocolate is more your thing, the brownie mix is a fudgy and delicious option!

What Protein Powder is Best for Baking?

This is a common question! While there are many resources that outline best types of protein for baking, I typically use a whey protein for my baking purposes.

Whey protein is a solid choice for baking because it's easy to find, comes in tons of flavors, and is cost effective. I enjoy the taste of vanilla whey protein mug cake the most!

However if you are vegan, pea protein may be a better option for you since whey protein is dairy based.

Choosing the right type of protein from the start can help you avoid many common problems people face when baking with protein powders such as a dry mug cake, flavorless mug cake, or soggy cake.

Baking is quite the science and we'll get into how to troubleshoot your mug cakes down below.

Protein Mug Cake Ingredients

Mug cake recipes are pretty popular for many reasons and this easy protein mug cake is no exception! It's quick, easy, healthy, and requires only a few ingredients.

  • 2 tablespoon Naked Nutrition Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
  •  ¼ cup 2% Milk
  • 3 tablespoon Oat flour
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla
  • Any mix-ins you want, such as: chocolate chips, rainbow sprinkles, or a dollop of peanut butter.

How To Make Protein Cake In a Mug

Round up the ingredients and let's get to baking! Our 5 minute high protein mug cake is surprisingly simple...

Cooking this is easy because the microwave is fast and takes no time to preheat like an oven. You might be thinking, can you microwave protein powder?

And yes! Blended into this cake batter, it takes on the properties of flour and helps to make a healthier dessert option with an extra kick of protein.

Substitutions & Allergy Swaps

If you need to swap out any ingredients for dietary reasons or just your preference, here are some suitable subs for the microwave protein cake. Naked Nutrition offers many different types of protein options that are suitable for almost any dietary need you could imagine!

  • Milk - you can use any type of milk you like here, I happen to like the 2% milk but if you need to go dairy free, use sweetened or unsweetened almond milk.
  • Protein Powder - Swap whey protein for pea protein for a vegan friendly mug cake.
  • How Do I Make a Mug Cake Without an Egg? For our recipe here, simply leave out the egg. You won't miss it one bit and I found the texture is still great without adding in an egg.

Tips and Tricks to the PERFECT Mug Cake

Since we are baking here, combining the ingredients in the correct order is essential for the best outcome. Even with seemingly simple recipes like protein cakes, the order and the ingredients matter!

Why is my mug cake so dry? Using oat flour and protein powder can absorb more liquid than typical all purpose flour in baking. Try adding ½ tablespoon of water on top of your batter before microwaving to ensure a moist cake!
