These everything egg rolls are a fun take on traditional egg rolls and taste like a grown-up version of crab Rangoon. They're crispy on the outside with a creamy crab filling seasoned with delicious everything bagel seasoning! What's not to love?

Who didn't grow up eating Crab rangoon at their local Chinese restaurant? Those deep-fried wontons filled with molted cream cheese were the best part of any meal.

The Origin of The Egg Roll

Did you know egg rolls aren't traditional? Although they resemble spring rolls, they're a unique spin and showed up in the US in the early 1920s. Their first appearance in cookbooks was in 1917, when Chinese chefs rolled a savory filling in a paper-thin egg layer. The name stuck, even when the wrapper changed!

You'll love these everything egg rolls!

These everything egg rolls are a major upgrade on the deep-fried appetizer we grew up with. They have a crispy fried exterior and hot, gooey cream cheese interior with flecks of sweet crab meat and everything bagel seasoning. Plus, it's such an easy recipe. These are perfect for entertaining!

Everything Bagel Seasoning is the perfect complement to the cream cheese filling, as those flavors were created to be together! This spice blend has white and black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion flakes, garlic, and salt. These spices add flavor and a little crunch to this delicious crab rangoon egg roll recipe.

This was inspired by my Seared Ahi Tuna, because while eating it, I was craving something crunchy to go with it. I already had the Everything Bagel Seasoning out and some egg roll wrappers on hand! It's a crab rangoon meets everything bagel served up egg roll style.

What's Typically In an Egg Roll?

Although there are many variations of egg rolls, most include cabbage, meat, and other seasonings deep-fried in an egg roll wrapper.

After frying, the egg roll becomes crunchy, and the flavors of the filling meld together. Most egg rolls are served with a dipping sauce that complements the flavors.

Everything Bagel Egg Roll Ingredients

These easy to find ingredients may already be in your kitchen! It's simple, but definitely special when combined in these fried egg rolls.

Eggroll Ingredients

  • Egg roll wrappers - These form the perfect crispy shell. Look for gluten-free egg roll wrappers if you need to avoid wheat.
  • Cream cheese - You'll need two packages to fill everything egg rolls.
  • Cilantro - Roughly chop the cilantro to mix into the cream cheese mixture for a pop of freshness.
  • Everything But The Bagel Seasoning - This secret ingredient adds so much flavor and texture!
  • Coconut oil - Use refined coconut oil for frying; it has no coconut scent. You can use vegetable oil to fry these crispy egg rolls, too.
  • Crab meat - This is optional, but sweet crab meat tastes fantastic with the cream cheese and spice blend!

Thai Chili Sauce Ingredients

  • Sweet Thai chili sauce - This store-bought condiment is an excellent base for this dipping sauce, but it is too sweet on its own.
  • Soy sauce - Add a little umami flavor and saltiness to the chili sauce.
  • Sriracha - The heat from the sriracha will cut through the creaminess of the cheese so well.

Steps To Make Everything Egg Rolls

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, cilantro, everything bagel seasoning, and the crab meat. Mix with a hand mixer.
  2. Use a cookie scoop to place the mixture into the center of an egg roll wrapper.
  3. Take 2 corners and fold them in towards the middle.
  4. Take the bottom corner and fold it into the center of the wrapper.
  5. Using your finger and a small amount of water, wet the edges of the remaining corner.
  6. Roll the egg roll up and place the seam side down on a plate. Repeat.
  7. In a medium-sized skillet with a heavy bottom, add ¼ cup of coconut oil and heat over medium heat.
  8. Cook each egg roll in the hot oil for 45 seconds to one minute on each side until golden brown. Depending on how high the oil is on the sides of the egg roll, you may need to flip it multiple times to brown it on all 4 sides.
  9. Do this in batches if necessary.
  10. When they are done, place them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  11. While they cool, mix sriracha, soy sauce, and sweet chili sauce in a small bowl.
  12. Dip the everything egg rolls in the sauce and enjoy!

Sauces For Egg Rolls

Many Chinese restaurants serve egg rolls with bright red sweet and sour dipping sauce. Some other options include a spicy peanut sauce or a spicy soy sauce dip.

I like to doctor up some store-bought sweet chili sauce with a little soy sauce and sriracha. It makes the sauce taste a little more grown-up and adds so much flavor to this recipe.

These everything egg rolls can actually be breakfast egg rolls! They're almost like an everything bagel with cream cheese, only deep-fried and filled with sweet crab meat. They're great with hot sauce, too!

Spring Rolls vs Egg Rolls

If you've ever wondered about the difference between a spring roll and an egg roll, there are a few main takeaways. First, it's important to note that spring rolls are a traditional food in Vietnam, Thailand, and China, and many variations are the "right way" to make them depending on where you are!

For Americans, most spring rolls resemble Vietnamese spring rolls. They are a cold appetizer with rice noodles, a protein (tofu, chicken, or shrimp), sprouts, and fresh basil and mint. The filling is wrapped in a dampened rice paper wrapper that has a slightly chewy texture. Spring rolls are often served with a delicious spicy peanut sauce.

Although eggs roll are rolled like spring rolls, everything else is different. The filling usually contains a hot mixture of cabbage, meat, and other seasonings and vegetables. They are rolled in a wheat flour wrapper and then deep-fried. Egg rolls are served hot with a sweet sauce. As noted above, egg rolls are native to the US but have spread across cultures.

What to Serve with Egg Rolls

Think of these everything egg rolls as an appetizer. They are the perfect beginning to a savory meal and are the best egg rolls for brunch!

Since these everything egg rolls are so creamy and rich, I like to follow them up with lean, bright flavors like this seared ahi tuna, crunchy Thai salmon, or mango avocado salad and lots of fresh veggies.

FAQs

What's the difference between an egg roll and a spring roll?

The two appetizers are pretty different. Spring rolls are a cold appetizer usually featuring rice noodles, cold shrimp or tofu, sprouts, and fresh herbs wrapped in a soft rice paper wrapper. They are traditional in China, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Egg rolls are a hot appetizer filled with cabbage, meat (often ground pork), and various seasonings or vegetables deep-fried in a flour wrapper.

They're usually served with a sweet sauce and are a Chinese-American invention.

What's an egg roll wrapper made off?

Egg roll wrappers are flour-based products made with wheat flour and eggs. This specific formula makes a crispy, bubbly exterior when fried, and is why egg rolls have a distinct appearance and texture.

Are egg rolls vegan?

Most conventional egg rolls are not vegan because the wrappers are made with a mixture of flour and egg. However, vegan egg roll wrappers do exist!

With a vegan wrapper, you can add your favorite vegan ingredients like cabbage, carrots, water chestnuts, and tofu for a delicious homemade vegan egg roll.
