My Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail is a beautiful marriage between the two classics. Shrimp swim in a bright, bold sauce made with ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire, and tons of spices. Garnished with celery leaves, and you’ve got an appetizer guests will be gathering around all evening!

With the holidays quickly approaching, I’ve switched into hosting mode – my favorite! Which means I’ve been in the kitchen around the clock, testing out new appetizers to share with friends and family at festive happy hours and/or dinner parties.
This Bloody Mary shrimp cocktail is one such concoction! High level, it’s a Bloody Mary with shrimp. But the rich, zesty sauce of ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire, and all the best seasonings transforms it into a next-level appetizer. Seriously, expect heads to turn.
But this has become one of my favorite recipes, mainly because it takes almost no time at all to make! After you defrost the shrimp, everything comes together within 20 minutes. Busy mom win!

Important Ingredients
We’re combining the tried-and-true ingredients found in a Bloody Mary and in a shrimp cocktail. Together, they create a fancy shrimp cocktail that will leave an impression.

- Shrimp - Shrimp is the main ingredient in this shrimp Bloody Mary cocktail! You’ll need one pound of pre-cooked frozen shrimp – deveined and peeled WITH the tail on. Alternatively, you can use raw shrimp and poach them in boiling water.
- Ketchup - This shrimp cocktail staple reinvigorates the connection in our Bloody Mary-infused version. The tomato flavor adds signature brightness, but has a nice and thick texture.
- Old Bay Seasoning - This classic seafood seasoning adds incredible complexity with its savory depth.
- Various Spices & Seasonings - In addition to Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, and kosher salt further enhance the cocktail’s flavor profile.
- Horseradish - Specifically, grated and prepared horseradish. This root vegetable has an intense bite with a kick of heat. It’s typically found in cocktail sauce recipes, and mine is no different.
- Lemon Juice - For brightness and zest. I always recommend freshly squeezed, but bottled will work in a pinch.
- Worcestershire Sauce - Somehow, Worcestershire sauce is equally sweet, salty, savory, and spicy. Its layered flavors are key in both shrimp cocktail and Bloody Mary recipes, and it complements the ketchup and horseradish. Don’t skip it!
- Celery Salt - I mix in celery salt to the sauce itself, and use a little extra as a final garnish on top.
- Vodka (optional) - For a boozy, adult kick!
Swaps and Substitutions
Missing an ingredient or not a fan of a few listed above? Don’t worry! There’s almost always a replacement to accommodate your preferences while keeping this Bloody Mary shrimp recipe just as tasty.
- Fresh Garlic - Instead of garlic powder, mince or grate a clove of fresh garlic. Fresh garlic is much more potent than garlic powder, so use a light hand to find the ideal amount.
- Horseradish. Not a fan of horseradish, or entirely out at home? Wasabi paste, spicy mustard, and fresh ginger can be used to get a similar effect. Horseradish sauce can work if all else fails, but the creaminess from the mayonnaise will affect the sauce's texture.
- Tomato Alternatives. Tomato paste can be used in place of ketchup. Dilute it with water before mixing in, since it’s more concentrated. You can also include a small amount alongside the ketchup for a more pungent tomato taste and a thicker texture. Or use regular tomato juice, noting the sauce will be of a thinner consistency.
- Bloody Mary Mix. Forgo the ketchup and/or tomato paste, and use a Bloody Mary mix as the foundation of the cocktail dipping sauce.
- Lime Juice. Fresh or bottled lime juice can be swapped in for the lemon.

Tips for the Perfect Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail

- Serving this appetizer at a large holiday gathering with children in attendance? Make two versions – one with vodka and one without, so guests of all ages can dig in and enjoy.

- Boozy: Authentic to the traditional Bloody Mary, vodka is a nod to the inspiration of this fancy shrimp cocktail recipe! This spirit is a great inclusion for happy hours, fancier dinner parties, or dinner after a long day.
- Spicy: Increase the heat with a diced jalapeño pepper, hot sauce, extra horseradish, or a splash of pickle juice.
